Climbing 101: Vertical Limits
April 14, 2018 from 9AM-3PM
May 26, 2018 from 9AM-3PM
June 30, 2018 from 9AM-3PM
This introductory course provides the fundamentals necessary to begin outdoor rock climbing. This course covers proper belaying techniques, safety considerations, movement, and rappelling. Students will learn proper verbal commands, basic climbing knots, and how to work as a team in the vertical environment. In addition, students will learn how to properly size climbing harnesses and shoes and will gain an understanding of the requirements and skills needed to pass “belay certification” tests at climbing gyms. This course will give you the confidence and motivation to explore the great climbing opportunities throughout Virginia and the mid-Atlantic.
This course is provided along the beautiful Rappahannock River, right outside of the Fredericksburg city limits. Our local crag is approximately 15 minutes from the shop.
What to Bring:
Clothing: It can be chilly in the early spring and late fall, so dress appropriately. The rock face is accessible from a trail that tends to become overgrown mid-summer; therefore, we recommend you wear closed-toe shoes and pants for the hike in. For all of our rock climbing courses we recommend comfortable clothing that is non-restrictive. Do not forget a rain jacket! A beautiful sunny morning can lead to an afternoon downpour, so be prepared.
Food and Water: The amount of water depends on the time of year and individual climber. We recommend bringing no less than one liter of water. You will be burning a lot of calories throughout the day so bring lunch and snacks.
All other climbing gear is provided!
