Old Rag Hike
August 7 @ 4:45 am - 4:00 pm$20.00
River Rock staff and clients are headed to hikes in Africa and Nepal this fall and we are busy training for our treks. We figured why keep all the excitement to ourselves – we want you to train with us! Train Like a Trekker!
Train Like a Trekker meet-ups include clinics, hikes, and other events that keep you involved in our training and planning process. We hope that our beginners and experienced hikers will join us to learn and to share as we gear up for our big trip.
Join us on our first Old Rag day hike of the year. You can come to preview and practice the hike prior to a Sunrise Sip (scheduled in August) or just join us for a fun, challenging hike.
Hike in a glance: this is a 9-mile hike providing experience on advancing elevation, changes in terrain, and rock scrambling.
Meet at River Rock Outfitter at 4:45AM or meet at the Old Rag Parking lot at 6:30AM.
What to bring:
- At least 2L of water (preferably more)
- Calorie rich snacks (healthy mix of carbs, proteins, and fats)
- Sturdy hiking boots or shoes
- Day pack
- Light rain coat or poncho
- Trekking poles (optional but helpful)
Parking is limited so we suggest carpooling if possible. If you have a Shenandoah pass then bring it along; otherwise, parking is $25.00. Please consider donating a few dollars to your carpooling volunteer to cover parking and/or gas expenses.

Keep in mind: This is a technical hike with increased elevation and rock scrambling. Our experienced American Hiking Guide Association and Wilderness First Responder Certified Guide is on the trail, but it may take rescue personnel an hour or more before they reach us in an emergency. This is not a pet or stroller friendly trail.
Refund Policy Note: We are excited to get you outside and enjoying our courses and events. Each activity is tailored made for your specific needs and goals for the sport. Since we offer private/small group instruction and special events, our guides’ schedules are busy. Please be considerate of their schedule and make sure you arrive for your activity on time and prepared. Payments are non-refundable. If the activity is cancelled due to weather, then we will do all we can to schedule a rain date. Your guide will work with you to reschedule your activity or, if available, provide a reasonable alternative. If you must cancel for any reason, then notify your guide immediately. We will work with you to reschedule if a cancellation is made at least 48 hours in advance of your scheduled activity.
